Why should I support TFK Metro DC?

Perhaps now more than ever, DC area children need to be reacquainted with the great outdoors. Kids are now spending more time indoors and issues such as childhood obesity, diabetes and asthma are on the rise at an alarming rate. Even more troubling are the teen drop-out rates and youth crime statistics. Our poor and minority communities are disproportionately effected by all these issues.

How can I help?

Participate or Donate — either option makes a wonderful contribution to a child's life. Volunteering is a wonderful way to reacquaint yourself with nature. It only takes a couple of hours to make a real difference.  Every little bit helps bring another child out of his sedentary lifestyle and surroundings to enjoy the beauty that is nature, all while having a great, healthy, active bike ride.

Childhood obesity in the United States has increased. Almost 9 million children and teens are overweight. Minority adolescents are more likely to be overweight.

The number of emergency visits for asthma has increased 36%. The rates for blacks were 3 times greater than the rates for whites.

17 percent of high school students carry weapons. Homicide was the second leading cause of death for youth, ages 10-24.

Does It Work?

Recent studies show that “adult mentoring” programs such as TFK Metro DC can help improve a child’s grades and school attendance, as well as their self-esteem and health. TFK Metro DC has gathered experts in Childcare, Environment, Law Enforcement, Medicine and Business to develop and implement our program of fun and education.
